Technical Development develops, evaluates and promotes safe and efficient equipment and methods of work and provides output information, specialist services and advice on forest operations. Best practice advice, technical workshops and operational efficiency assessment covering machinery, equipment, systems, work methods and productivity in large, medium and small scale forests and woodlands, including:.

Silviculture and Soils - soil classification and site assessment, tree species and mixtures selection and management, continuous cover forestry. Also covering continuous cover forestry. Establishment - mechanical ground preparation and drainage on restocking and new planting sites and in continuous cover forestry.

Also covering motor-manual and machine establishment operations such as planting, weeding, re-spacing and pre-commercial thinning. Chemicals - pesticide use in forest tree protection and weed control. Also covering pollution control and regulations for transport, storage, use and environmental safeguards.

Fundamental practical operations for establishing new woodland on derelict land and other brownfield, degraded former industrial sites. Includes ground preparation, organic soil amendments, drainage, forest design, planting and species choice in brownfield regeneration.

Practical courses on some aspects of Woodland Operations including soil and site recognition, tree species selection, continuous cover forestry, pesticide application and tariffing. We are foresters with practical experience in forestry operations and management, holding various qualifications.

Our historical reports give detailed background on a wide range of specialist operations. Technical Development is funded to provide specific services to Forestry Commission each year. Our work is supplemented by external income generation through the TD Forest Operations consultancy service.

We have produced internal FC technical reports since and have both current reports and archive material from both Work Study Branch and Technical Development.

For the purposes of the present chapter, forestry is understood to embrace all the fieldwork required to establish, regenerate, manage and protect forests and to harvest their products. The last step in the production chain covered by this chapter is the transport of raw forest products.

In our Newsletter we inform you weekly about the newest articles in forest. The forest sector consists of forestry and forest industry. Forestry refers to forest management and the growing, harvesting and selling of timber. In addition, there are activities and livelihoods that either serve or are dependent on the forest sector.

Recovery of forest residues Forest residues consist of small trees, branches, tops and un-merchantable wood left in the forest after the cleaning, thinning or final felling of forest stands, used as fuel without any intermittent applications. Three main sources of forest residues can be distinguished: slash from final fellings, slash and small trees from thinnings and cleanings, and un-merchantable wood. Terrain chipping Comminution in the terrain, or at the source, requires a highly mobile chipper suitable for cross-country operations and equipped with a tippable 15—20 m3 chip container. The chipper moves in the terrain on strip roads and transfers the biomass with its grapple loader to the feeder of the chipping device. The load is hauled to the road side and tipped into a truck container, which may be on the ground or on a truck trailer. Large landing areas are not required, but a level and firm site is necessary for the truck containers. When large volumes of forest fuels are produced, the terrain chipping system becomes difficult to control. At present, the role of this system is diminishing. Chipping at a landing roadside chipping Comminution at a landing is the traditional option of forest chip production.

Our mission is to help leaders in multiple sectors develop a deeper understanding of the global economy. Our flagship business publication has been defining and informing the senior-management agenda since Digital technology is revolutionizing industries around the globe, from manufacturing to healthcare. Even agriculture is undergoing enormous change due to technologies like variable-rate fertilization and automated harvesting. Forestry, on the other hand, has lagged behind most other industries in the adoption of digital technology. This, however, is finally starting to change. Studies are already showing productivity increases in general agriculture at rates of 5 to 25 percent annually, with returns on investment of one to two years for digital technology depending of course on many factors, such as farm size, crop selection, and other conditions. Analogous gains are not merely on the horizon for forest products but are also being realized by some pioneers today. The size of these gains is comparable only to the shift from animal-powered to mechanized processes and, in food farming, the Green Revolution of the s. That said, in forestry-management science, digital solutions currently confront a system that still operates largely on the basis of fundamentals developed by Hans Carl von Carlowitz more than years ago.

This resource is currently being used primarily for swidden agriculture or exploited as round wood to neighboring countries. This is leading to a situation where forest areas consist of remnant forest largely depleted of valuable timber, or heavily degraded secondary vegetation that has undergone several cycles of shifting cultivation.
