The IDEAS program prepares students to succeed at the intersection of design, the arts, and engineering. Students hone skills in identifying which scientific and engineering principles need to be understood to achieve design goals, and use computer-aided design CAD software and fabrication tools in the lab to create a solution for their design. Students also develop foundational knowledge in design and engineering by working in collaborative groups on project-based studies.

What is a makerspace?
In this space, you will explore new fabrication processes with prototyping, testing and creating mockups in a variety of scales and materials. The fabrication lab provides a space for students, faculty and staff to experiment and explore new fabrication processes with prototyping, testing and creating mockups in a variety of scales and materials, with a standard suite of tools ranging from woodworking to light-machining along with CAD and other 3-D design capabilities employing an Epilog Helix 50 laser cutter and Dimension sst 3D printer. The lab is equipped with computers with software such as Rhino, CAD, Solidworks and a multitude of relevant software. This studio houses 3D FDM printers, a laser cutter and digital scanning and modeling tools. Dell Precision workstations run software such as Rhino 3D for digital model design. There are 10 work benches equipped for electronics and design project work. The dirty shop fabrication space is centered around large format CNC milling and cutting tables and lathes. The Fabrication and Electronics Lab Manager has full authority over the Fab Lab area and ensures that safe practices are taught, including the responsibility, authority, and obligation to prohibit shop or tool access for the safety of an individual and others in the shop. Students, faculty, and staff must all comply with all applicable health and safety regulations, policies, work practices, and Fab Lab policies. Students who have taken the required orientation, signed the affidavit, and paid required fees may use the Fab Lab during designated daytime hours.
