Posted by Tammy Borden. After years of sluggish growth and in several cases decline , many areas of the country are experiencing a thriving manufacturing sector. Today, 6 out of 10 open skilled production positions are unfilled. While automation and robotics may help fill the labor gap, skilled workers will still be needed to apply problem-solving capabilities, perform analysis and manage production. One reason manufacturers are finding it difficult to fill positions, both skilled and unskilled, is the lack of trade school opportunities for young men and women.
Manufacturing Technology Products
While this may sound like science fiction, these kinds of factories have been a reality for more than 15 years. To imagine a world where robots do all the physical work, one simply needs to look at the most ambitious and technology-laden factories of today. In June , the Chinese e-commerce giant JD. Without robots, it would take as many as workers to fully staff this 40K square foot warehouse — instead, the factory requires only five technicians to service the machines and keep them working. To answer this, we took a deep dive into 8 different steps of the manufacturing process, to see how they are starting to change:.
The road ahead
For many industrial manufacturers, what was once a clear path to success is now fraught with uncertainty. Making equipment for a wide array of industrial activities — such as big construction projects, large industrial facilities, oil and gas fields, and refineries — has for years been difficult to navigate, but major companies often used their size to sidestep obstacles. The strength of having multiple product lines covering the full gamut of industrial operations frequently allowed industrial manufacturers to eke out profits from some segment of their customer base even as slowdowns imperiled other sectors. But juggling business in this way is no longer a viable strategy, particularly if a company relies on traditional machinery for its revenue streams, as many industrial manufacturers do. Customers increasingly seek improved efficiency and production transparency from connected technologies and digitization. Their loyalty to companies that fail to offer innovative products is waning. Equally important, the inherent advantages of large, diversified organizations — such as lower cost of capital and sophisticated talent development and recruitment programs — are diminishing as capital market efficiency improves lending outcomes for all participants and increasing information transparency provides windows into attractive new jobs across the corporate landscape for the best prospective workers.
Smart manufacturing is a broad category of manufacturing that employs computer-integrated manufacturing , high levels of adaptability and rapid design changes, digital information technology, and more flexible technical workforce training. The broad definition of smart manufacturing covers many different technologies. Some of the key technologies in the smart manufacturing movement include big data processing capabilities, industrial connectivity devices and services, and advanced robotics. Smart manufacturing utilizes big data analytics , to refine complicated processes [ clarification needed ] and manage supply chains. Velocity informs the frequency of data acquisition, which can be concurrent with the application of previous data. Variety describes the different types of data that may be handled. Volume represents the amount of data. Some products have embedded sensors, which produce large amounts of data that can be used to understand consumer behavior and improve future versions of the product. Advanced industrial robots , also known as smart machines operate autonomously and can communicate directly with manufacturing systems.
Future Factory: How Technology Is Transforming Manufacturing
Our mission is to help leaders in multiple sectors develop a deeper understanding of the global economy. Our flagship business publication has been defining and informing the senior-management agenda since The digital revolution is now breaching the walls of manufacturing as it continues to disrupt media, finance, consumer products, healthcare, and other sectors. Indeed, the explosion in data and new computing capabilities—along with advances in other areas such as artificial intelligence, automation and robotics, additive technology, and human-machine interaction—are unleashing innovations that will change the nature of manufacturing itself. Industry and academic leaders agree that digital-manufacturing technologies will transform every link in the manufacturing value chain , from research and development, supply chain, and factory operations to marketing, sales, and service. Digital connectivity among designers, managers, workers, consumers, and physical industrial assets will unlock enormous value and change the manufacturing landscape forever. Yet while manufacturing generates more data than any other sector of the economy, few companies are harnessing it. One oil-and-gas company, for example, discards 99 percent of its data before decision makers have a chance to use it. Consider traditional car manufacturers and Uber, which are both—at the highest level—in the business of moving people around. Car makers meet that need on the floors of factories and showrooms, using a century of manufacturing experience.
5 Manufacturing Technology Trends to Watch in 2019
Technological advances have driven dramatic increases in industrial productivity since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. The steam engine powered factories in the nineteenth century, electrification led to mass production in the early part of the twentieth century, and industry became automated in the s. In the decades that followed, however, industrial technological advancements were only incremental, especially compared with the breakthroughs that transformed IT, mobile communications, and e-commerce. Now, though, we are in the midst of a fourth wave of technological advancement: the rise of new digital industrial technology known as Industry 4. See Exhibit 1.

Digital manufacturing: The revolution will be virtualized
Federal government websites often end in. The site is secure. Steady industry growth was a trend for manufacturers in According to a recent Forbes report , U.
Being world-class in tooling, molding or equipment technology is challenging enough. At MGS, we pride ourselves in combining excellence and integration across all three.
Global Engineering and Manufacturing
The smart factory represents a leap forward from more traditional automation to a fully connected and flexible system—one that can use a constant stream of data from connected operations and production systems to learn and adapt to new demands. Connectivity within the manufacturing process is not new. Yet recent trends such as the rise of the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4. Shifting from linear, sequential supply chain operations to an interconnected, open system of supply operations—known as the digital supply network —could lay the foundation for how companies compete in the future.
