Storage and handling

The arc is struck between a continuously fed consumable filler wire and the workpiece, melting both the filler wire and the workpiece in the immediate vicinity. The entire arc area is covered by a shielding gas , which protects the molten weld pool from the atmosphere. FCAW is a highly productive process for a range of plain carbon, alloy, stainless and duplex steels. It can also be used for surfacing and hardfacing. It offers more flexibility with alloy compositions than MIG, for instance. It also typically enables higher wire deposition rates and greater arc stability although the process efficiency of MIG is usually superior. An externally supplied shielding gas is sometimes used, but often the flux itself is relied upon to generate the necessary protection from the atmosphere, producing both gaseous protection and liquid slag protecting the weld. The process is widely used in construction because of its high welding speed and portability. One type of FCAW requires no shielding gas. This is made possible by the flux core in the tubular consumable electrode. However, this core contains more than just flux. It also contains various ingredients that when exposed to the high temperatures of welding generate a shielding gas for protecting the arc.

During the manufacture of most flux-cored wire, a seam is formed along the length of the wire. It is through this seam that moisture can be absorbed into the flux. Plain water alone would not hurt the weld, but the heat and arc break down water into its basic elements, hydrogen and oxygen.
